Iran sanctions and the lingering ghost of Bush

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev denounced EU and U.S. sanctions against Iran, saying they “”did not agree” to any sanctions separate from the joint UN resolution Russia supported last week, the BBC reported. These sanctions are necessary, according to Sec. of Defense Robert Gates at a U.S. Senate hearing, because Iran may posess the capacity to attack Europe with scores of missiles … in the year 2020.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, it should; it was this kind of alarmist nonsense that the Bush administration and it’s ally Tony Blair used to justify invading Iraq. Just like 2002/03, no reason was given by Gates as to why Iran may want to attack Europe. I suppose the Obama administration doesn’t need one; neither did the Bush administration.

So much for change we can believe in.
